Environmental Activism and Global Media

This book discusses the past, present, and future of environmental activism and global media, elaborating on the critical role that media plays in influencing awareness regarding environmental challenges and in inspiring the action(s) to address them. Including contributions from an international interdisciplinary panel of scholars, this volume analyzes various facets of media and activism in the environmental context. The volume is divided into four sections. Chapters in section I provide a survey of the evolving relationship between global media and environmental activism, laying the groundwork for understanding how media channels the support for activism, the history of environmental activism, and the construction of narratives within the political, economic and the social spheres of society. Chapters in section II discuss the role of mass media in raising environmental issues in the era of globalization, digitization and social media. Chapters in section III address how the advancement of media platforms has facilitated globalized environmental activism. Chapters in section IV are focused on the policy perspective and how governance structures affect the environmental activism process. Introducing its readers to the most symbolic events with respect to environmental activism, globalization, and media at large through analytical and socio-political movements, this volume will be of interest to scholars and students of media, political science, environmental studies, cultural studies, and international studies.
