Produktbeschreibung

Because of its comprehensive nature and intricate scenography, the new Holocaust Galleries at the Imperial War Museum London, opened in October 2021, are at the centre of almost all recent major narrative, political, and ethical debates about Holocaust representation in museums. This book argues that the new exhibition is an ideal global case-study on the possibilities and limitations of representing trauma and violence in museums today, one that exemplifies how Holocaust exhibitions can promote democratic, civic, and human rights values. Bringing together texts by both museum curators and academic scholars, it encourages a broader dialogue about Holocaust education and the role of museums in it amongst museum practitioners, public history educators, and university researchers alike. Starting with a long essay by James Bulgin, Head of Content for the new Holocaust Galleries, about the genesis and realisation of the exhibition, it includes an in-depth interview by Stephan Jaeger with IWM researchers James Bulgin and James Taylor, briefer essays by educators, community members, and scholars involved in the development of the exhibition, as well as critical scholarly essays analysing the exhibition from numerous theoretical angles.
