To be yourself - from 1968 onwards, that became an increasingly difficult task. The articles in this volume reconstruct prominent developments in the contemporary history of the self in the tensions generated by the processes of therapeuticization, politicization and emotionalization that have been occurring for half a century. In this context, they discuss new perspectives on the history of German-speaking societies.
