1. Why did you choose this topic?

In the context of establishing a new BA programme with the core topics of product design, craft and material culture, it became apparent that both students and teachers lack concrete orientation and guidance for design teaching that will make it easier to integrate scientific ways of working into design practice in a productive way that is accessible to other disciplines.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

This book discusses new approaches how the concept of learning by research can be integrated into product design studio teaching from BA level on. It shows study results that offer both a general orientation for research in design education and guidelines for students how to integrate research into their project work.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

The field of practice-based design research is still faced with the challenge of answering the question of how new knowledge is created through practical designing and which scientific standards have to be met when carrying out design research. The publication attempts to show product design students and design educators ways in which research can become part of their everyday design work.
